Ranji Trophy 2016-17, Round 8, Day 3 report and highlights: Punjab trail Gujarat by 341 runs

Former champions Punjab continued to trail Gujarat by mammoth 341 runs, on Day Three of Round 8 of the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2016-17 at the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) Stadium in Belagavi on Thursday. Punjab, who earlier, failed to fire with the ball, as Gujarat put up a mammoth total of 624 for the loss of six wickets, failed to fire with the bat as well, as they were dismissed for 247 in the first innings, and suffered a follow-on, while in the second innings, they are currently 36 for the loss of a wicket, with Gitansh Khera being the only wicket to fall so far for mere 7.

Gujarat on the other hand have put themselves in a strong position in this tie, as they look all certain to claim the all-important seven points, with things looking completely in their favour, and Punjab being tipped to lose this tie on Day Four. Priyank Panchal’s triple century on day Two allowed Gujarat to decalre on 624, while Rush Kalaria crucial four-wicket haul allowed them to skittle Punjab for 247, as Manan Vohra was the top scorer with 68 runs, while Mayank Sidhana (39), Gitansh Khera (35 not out) and Manpreet Gony (26) played some cameo knocks, but could not save Punjab from the jaws of follow-on.

Hardik Patel and RP Singh complemented Kalaria by picking two wickets each. Having to wipe out a deficit of 377, after being asked to follow-on, to prevent Gujarat from winning a bonus point, Punjab closed on 36 for 1, with Vohra (14 batting) and Jiwanjot Singh (4 batting) at the crease, reports PTI.
